The old parish of Falkland comprises the villages of Falkland, Freuchie, Newton of Falkland and Dunshelt.
The Centre for Stewardship was awarded funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to explore the lives of those living in our communities around the time of World War 1. This was a 20 month project (ending February 2016) and included:
- Walking tours around the villages.
- Talks
- An opportunity to discover who lived in your house, a chance to research old buildings or ‘adopt a solider’ and find out what happened to those who went to war.
- Looking at the changes to society, including the lives of those who worked and lived on Falkland Estate and at the House of Falkland
- Training opportunities in oral history and research.
- A range of creative and practical workshops
We are happy to leave this page up as a resource page for anyone interested in ‘old Falkland’.

What was happening in our villages around the time of the war? Former local man Jack Burgess has been researching Falkland news for months. He has kindly agreed to share his year by year accounts with us.
These records give us a fascinating insight into the day to day life of villagers, the impact the war had and the sadness felt as tragic news from the Front filtered through. If you are interested in joining Jack’s local news circular then please contact him.
