Rural Skills

Rural Skills at the
Centre for Stewardship in Falkland

The Centre for Stewardship covers 1500 hectares of land, farm, forest and hill

At the Centre for Stewardship we are passionate about developing young peoples skills in the rural sector to help them develop, care and manage our local landscape and environment. We also know how good just being and working in the outdoors can be for everyone.

Please take a look at our programme to see if one of them might be for you or someone you know. Whether it’s, volunteering with us to allow you some time to work outdoors on a valuable project, gaining work experience and some accredited training, completing a Modern Apprenticeship in forestry or developing a new business for which you have the first seed of an idea we would love to help and work with you.

Our Bright Future

This programme is running until 2020 and offers three levels of activity from our base in Falkland as well as at a number of other sites throughout Fife working with partners at The Ecology Centre in Kinghorn, Cambo Estate near Kingsbarns and Silverburn Park in Leven.

Level 1 is targeted at 15 – 18 year olds who tend to be referred to us via school or another agency. The young people we work with benefit from a series of six sessions working on a project in the outdoors in small safe groups of up to 4 people. Tasks range form gardening and conservation to basic woodworking.

I really look forward to working here, sometimes it’s hard at home and I get angry and frustrated!  I come here and working outside on this project helps me.  It makes my week better Level one participant

Level 2 is all about offering Modern Apprenticeships to young people aged between 16 and 24 year living in Fife who are currently unemployed. We generally recruit on an annual basis inviting people to come and join us on a Rural Skills Academy for up to 6 weeks where they can gain skills, work experience and accredited training such as brushcutter and trimmer and First Aid. From the Academy we select onto our programme. All our opportunities are advertised on this website and the Fife Rural Skills Partnership Facebook.

I’m just completing a level 2 Modern Apprenticeship in Rural Skills which is enabling me to demonstrate all the different things I have learnt to do from working machinery like stihl saws to structural components and maintaining paths and surfaces.  This will give me my first formal qualification and some accredited tickets and a real job   Rob, Modern Apprentice

Level 3 is designed to introduce the idea of self-employment in the rural sector to young people and then for those who have an idea help them explore and develop it. For those who are ready we can then provide further help enrolling you on our WoodWorks programme where you will get individual support, mentoring and guidance as you begin to set up and establish your new business in the rural sector.

WoodWorks has given me the opportunity to set up a successful small enterprise delivering wood whittling workshops across Edinburgh, the Borders and Fife. There is no doubt I would not have had the confidence to do this without the support of the WoodWorks program. Lotte, WoodWorks participant
